First FJPI in NTT: A New Space for Women Journalists to Advance a Just Energy Transition

NTTHits.com, Kupang – CIS Timor of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) and the GEDSI JET Working Group of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), with support from Penabulu Foundation through the WE for JET project, are working to strengthen the involvement of women, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups in Indonesia’s just energy transition, particularly across NTT and NTB.

WE for JET, or Women and Vulnerable Groups Benefited and Lead on Transformative and Just Energy Transition in Indonesia, seeks to ensure that the shift toward cleaner energy is not only environmentally sustainable, but also socially just and inclusive.

A key approach in this effort is the integration of Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) into just energy transition processes. This approach is essential to ensure that communities most affected by climate change and energy inequality are not left behind.

To make this happen, collaboration across sectors is needed. Through a pentahelix strategy, media plays a strategic role in amplifying the voices, lived experiences, and concerns of vulnerable groups. In this context, women journalists are seen as important actors in shaping public narratives around climate change, energy transition, and social justice.

This shared commitment led to the establishment of the Forum Jurnalis Perempuan Indonesia (FJPI) in NTT, marking the first FJPI forum formed in the province.

“What we hope from today’s meeting is that it becomes an initial momentum to build a forum for the involvement and representation of women journalists in NTT, particularly in strengthening the role of media on climate change and just energy transition issues,” said Nurjanah, WE for JET Provincial Coordinator at Penabulu Foundation, on Saturday, 15 November 2025.

Director of CIS Timor NTT, Haris Oematan, also emphasized that the energy transition is part of Indonesia’s commitment to global efforts to reduce emissions. This commitment requires a gradual shift away from fossil fuels toward renewable energy.

According to Haris, the media has an important role in ensuring that the issue of just energy transition is understood not only as a technical or policy agenda, but also as a social justice issue. This includes looking at how women and persons with disabilities can access information, participate in decision-making, and benefit from climate and energy policies.

“This forum becomes a shared learning space to explore how media can support this issue, especially in relation to women’s and persons with disabilities’ access to climate change and just energy transition discussions,” Haris explained.

The establishment of FJPI NTT is expected to open a stronger platform for women journalists in the province to collaborate in campaigns, advocacy, and public education. It also provides a space for women journalists to deepen their understanding of energy transition issues, both in NTT and across Indonesia.

Through this forum, women journalists are expected to play a greater role in bringing community perspectives into the public conversation. Their reporting can help ensure that the transition to renewable energy does not overlook the realities of women, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable communities.
